Basic Function

The Application Scientist – Completions Fluids will be responsible to develop and deploy advanced chemical products for the oil and gas drilling industry using Locus’ unique biochemical solutions. The successful candidate will provide input on the conception and development of new products and technologies and deliver technical leadership to Locus Bio Energy team for product support and field related issues. Advanced knowledge of completion fluids and experience testing fluids are required for this role.

The Application Scientist – Completions Fluids will report directly to Locus Bio Energy Solutions Director of Technology.


  • The specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Managing Drilling and Completion Fluids Research and Development (R&D) projects through proposal, review and approval processes
  • Participating in Locus Bio Energy’s Intellectual Property (IP) team and identifying ideas for invention disclosures, consulting on intellectual property issues, conducting IP & literature searches and filing patent applications
  • Providing technical support for internal and customer queries as required
  • Serving as a technical representative on industry work groups
  • Assisting with technology transfer and scale-up from lab to commercial scale
  • Participating in customer/vendor interfaces

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit with a Can Do, Will Do Attitude
  • Master’s Degree in Chemistry or closely-related discipline
  • 15+ years’ experience in the oil & gas industry
  • 7+ years’ experience with drilling and completions fluids
  • 5 years + experience in a technical advisory role within a Research and Development (R&D) environment
  • Experience API testing procedures for Drilling and Completion Fluids
  • Superior organization and verbal / written communication skills are essential
  • Effectively working and communicating with all levels of the organization and contribute to a cohesive team working culture
  • Safety and quality focused with all technical and operational activities
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously – managing multiple tight deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and individual contributor

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry or closely-related disciplines with 10+ years’ experience in the oil & gas industry and 5+ years’ experience with drilling and completions fluids
  • Ideally 5+ years of experience in R&D setting, particularly in drilling and completion fluids
